Hurting but happy!

by | Sunday, September 28, 2008

This morning I participated in (and completed) the Capital City River Run Half Marathon. The emphasis is of course on “completed” – I wasn’t into breaking any records here. I got a pace of 10:15 per-mile (which was approximately what I had last year as well). The Capital City river run has become an annual tradition for me (this is my fifth year doing this, though it used to be a 10 mile run for the first three years). The route is scenic (through the Lansing Zoo, the River trail and Hawk Island Park and some pretty Lansing neighborhoods) and today was a particularly nice day for a run – cool and cloudy.

As to how I feel now, the subject line captures my current feelings quite accurately 🙂

The reluctant fundamentalist

I just finished reading "The reluctant fundamentalist" a novel by Mohsin Hamid over the break. (I had mentioned this novel in another context here). It is a tight, powerful novel, structured as a monologue, (reminiscent of Camus' The Fall, a fact that few reviewers...

India Breakfast, a photo report

The India themed breakfast at the College of Education, a kick-off for India Week, was a great success. [Here is a previous blog entry announcing this (and other) events.] I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who helped out, and also provide...

New ambigrams for AERA

I was invited to give two talks at the the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association in San Francisco. One was a Ignite presentation (5 minutes, 20 slides set to move at 15 seconds per slide), and the other was an ED Talk (sort of like a TED talk...

Algebra, version 2

I had posted yesterday a new ambigram for the word "algebra." It was a mirror-reflection design i.e. it reads the same when reflected in a mirror. What I liked about the design was the fact that it actually looks like an algebraic equation with a left-hand-side and a...

A surprise gift

I just received a gift in the mail. It was a box and in the box was One of those cool push pin toys... How cool is that! In the box was a short note that went: Hi Dr. Punya! It was a pleasure to meet you during the Quest Alliance Seminar in Bangalore. I really enjoyed...

Wicked problems, Design & Horst Rittel

Matt Koehler and I have often talked about the wicked problems of design and teaching with technology (most specifically in our handbook chapter on TPACK). We take the idea of wicked problems from a classic paper written by Rittel and Weber back in 1973. As Wikipedia...

Designing 917: A conversation

Danah Henriksen and I taught CEP917 (Knowledge Media Design) last semester. This was a somewhat unique class, with half the students being present here on campus and the other half online. We met synchronously once every two weeks and the rest of the class happened...

Academic publishing, a changing world

A few months ago I had posted a note about Harvard faculty considering and passing a resolution to freely publishing all their scholarship online (see this and this). Now it turns out that faculty at the Stanford University, School of Education have gone the same...

Update on SITE08 Keynote

A re-edited version of the SITE 2008 Keynote address (by Matt Koehler and me) has been uploaded to the website. You can find the new version here. This presentation depended quite heavily on the exact synching of slide transitions to the audio - and the previous...
