Life is about editing

by | Sunday, August 10, 2008

A fun and thought provoking, recursive music video by Allee Willis titled “Editing is Cool.” The video attempts to capture the process of creating this very video, from the lyrics, to the music to the special effects and so on. Denise Caruso (at Salon) quotes Allee Willis as saying, “… you can see every single stage of the song and video coming together, along with work logs and lyrics and lots more.”

Here is one of my favorite lines:

Reality is a perception
You must edit it to suit
your own needs

Speculative fiction and the future of learning

One of the most fun projects I have been part of was working with authors of speculative fiction around the futures of learning. This was the result of a collaboration with the Center for Science and the Imagination, Slate magazine and New America (supported by the...

New optical illusion: An oscillating visual paradox!

New optical illusion: An oscillating visual paradox!

A design for the word "illusions" inspired by a design by Scott Kim.  I have been obsessed with optical illusions for for a long time. This interest has played out in many ways: from the hundreds of ambigrams I have created to the new year’s videos we create as a...

The joy of learning: Of fire and trees and Dr. Feynman

Trees are some of the largest living things in the world. They can weigh tons. For instance the  One Oak Tree project measured and weighed a 222 year old Oak tree - and it's weight was 14.4 Tonnes (3.86 tonnes of which was dry weight). That's a lot of stuff! And this...

Wine + GPT4 + Code Interpreter: WOW!!

William Kamkwamba, TED talk

I had written a couple of days ago about William Kamkwamba, a Malawian high school student who built a windmill by looking at pictures in a book. From Bob Reuter's website (Keep IT Simple!) I discovered a TED talk that William had given in England, back in July....

Tipping point for online learning: The interview

Tipping point for online learning: The interview

I had written a blog post towards the beginning of the pandemic (Tipping point for online learning, OR the postman always rings twice). In this piece, I built on something Neil Postman had written back in 1998 to try and better understand the current context....

Finding the answers to What, When, & Where

Finding the answers to What, When, & Where

Three important questions that we often seek answers for are: WHAT is it?WHEN should we do it?WHERE should it happen? Turns out these questions can be answered just by replacing just one letter—namely replace "W" with "T." Here they are: ThatThenThere Simple. Here is...

Wicked problems, Design & Horst Rittel

Matt Koehler and I have often talked about the wicked problems of design and teaching with technology (most specifically in our handbook chapter on TPACK). We take the idea of wicked problems from a classic paper written by Rittel and Weber back in 1973. As Wikipedia...

There is no app for that

Ideas.TED.com has a new article titled—There's no app for good teaching: 8 ways to think about tech in ways that actually improve the classroom. It quotes a bunch of scholars and researchers, one of whom is yours truly. I am just posting this, for the record. Image...

Dear Allee, thank you so much for your note. You can’t imagine how happy it makes me to hear from you. Do you plan on being in Michigan sometime in the next few months? If so, I would love to have you visit my design seminar… It would be so wonderful for my students to see just how creatively you are using these media tools to express yourself. All the best in your future efforts. I look forward to hearing from you. ~ punya

Thank you so much, Punya! This video means so much to me and I’m so happy it affected you the way it did. I’m all about total integration of life and art and I finally had the chance to wrap it all up in this video. I will be doing more of the same so stay tuned. But I really do believe the key to a happy life is “editing”.

Btw, I’m a Michigan girl. Grew up in Detroit. Almost went to Michigan State but ended up at the University of Wisconsin. I spent many a day in Lansing though as my suster went there.

Once again, thanks for having such great taste!
